1. NAME OF THE DEPARTMENT

DIRECTORATE OF PEST WARNING & QUALITY CONTROL OF PESTICIDES PUNJAB, MULTAN

2. MISSION STATEMENT

Saving the crops from damage of insect pests and diseases, by creating awareness among the farming community about the damage caused by insect pests / diseases and measures to control it.
Creating a system of monitoring the pests and advising the growers for adopting necessary crop protection measures especially judicious use of desirable pesticides at appropriate timing.
The quality of pesticides is also to be ensured.

3. OBJECTIVES

This Directorate has following objectives:
1. Monitoring pest development.
2. Issuance of pest scouting reports.
3. Training in identification of insect pests and their appropriate and timely control measures.
4. Ensure that quality pesticides are available to the farmers.


4. FUNCTIONS

This Directorate has following functions:
1. Monitoring pest development. For this purpose, 55 pest scouting teams have been constituted in the entire Punjab (one team at tehsil level comprising of one Agricultural Officer & 2-3 Pest Surveyors/ Field Assistants). Each team conducts survey 5 days per week (8-10 spots are covered at random). Besides this 4 spots of 5 acre each have been fixed in each tehsil, where data is recorded on weekly basis.
2. Issuance of weekly/ fortnightly pest scouting reports of all the crops, orchards and vegetables in different ecological zones of the province.
3. Training of farmers, Extension workers and pesticide dealers in identification of insect pests and their appropriate and timely control measures. Training is done in the beginning of each crop season. Also educate about safe handling of pesticides and their effective use.
4. Ensure that quality pesticides are available to the farmers. For this purpose Pesticides samples are drawn from companies warehouses, stores & dealer shops and sent to Provincial & Federal Pesticides Testing Laboratories. The culprits are dealt with under the Pesticide Ordinance.

5. Pest Scouting Teams

1. At Tehsil Level: One Agricultural Officer along with 2-3 Field Assistants or Pest Surveyors for pest scouting of the crops in the tehsil.
2. At District Level: One Assistant Director along with 2-3 Field Assistants or Pest Surveyors for pest scouting of the crops in the tehsil.
3. At Regional Level: One Deputy Director along with 2-3 Field Assistants or Pest Surveyors for pest scouting of the crops in the tehsil.


6. SERVICES OFFERED

1. Pest Scouting of Cotton, Rice, Vegetables, Orchards & General Crops.
2. Quality Control of Pesticides.
3. Training in identifications of insect pests.
For any service kindly contact Assistant Director (Pest Warning) at District level or Agricultural Officer (PP) at tehsil level. These services are free of cost.

4. PROCEDURE

Agricultural Pesticides Ordinance
Pesticide Inspectors takes the sample from company warehouse, store or dealers shop, in three portions and sent one of them to the Provincial Pesticides Testing Lab, 2nd to Federal Pesticides Testing Lab and the third portion is handed over to the dealer. If the provincial Lab declares the sample unfit or substandard, FIR is registered against the firm. If the sample from Federal Lab is declared fit, the accused is quitted otherwise penalty is given according to rules.
