Soil and Water Conservation

Research Projects: Rabi = 57 Kharif = 35
Objectives
:
• To develop appropriate soil and water conservation technology for rainfed areas.

Achievements

• Technology development for growing fruit plants in eroded areas is in progress.
• Integration of green manure with deep ploughing is most effective to conserve moisture.
• Use of gypsum is helpful to conserve moisture.
• The screening of various native and exotic grasses is being done with characteristics of drought tolerance, spreading ability and palatability as fodder.
• Soil and water losses are being monitored at natural as well as artificial slopes.
• The yield of millets and sorghum can be increased by sowing in ditches as compared to flat sowing.
• Sowing of gram on top of ridges and wheat in between the ridges proved better for efficient use of moisture.

Future lines of work

• Development of low cost technologies for the rehabilitation of eroded lands.
• Development of soil crop management practices to conserve soil moisture.
