FUNCTIONS
The breeding and release of high yielding new wheat varieties is a continuous process which covers a wide range of wheat research activities involved in the evolution of genotypes resistant to biotic (rusts, bunts and other plant diseases) & abiotic (salt , heat, drought and frost ), wider adaptability and good baking quality characteristics along with nutritional aspects of wheat. Simultaneously, development of package of production technology for new wheat genotypes is also a continuous process. In this direction the varieties released pre-green revolution era were of low yielding capacity due to their tall stature, poor response to fertilizer, water and high susceptibility to plant diseases especially yellow, leaf and stem rusts. |
