Punjab Agricultural Research Board

Punjab Agricultural Research Board (PARB) was established through an Act during 1997. After its enactment, it remained dormant and did not perform any significant function up till 2007. The efficiency of the Agricultural Research System (ARS) in Punjab dwindled with the passage of time, especially during 1995-2004, therefore, the Government, realizing the importance of research in enhancing the productivity of the agricultural sector, decided in 2007 to revamp PARB to perform its functions as provided in the Act promulgated in 1997. Unfortunately, since enactment, proper funds were never provided to PARB to perform assigned functions. The mandate of PARB as provided in the Act is to “take all such measures as it deems necessary for the promotion, development and conduct of agricultural research in the Punjab”.

After revamping/restructuring in 2006-07, PARB has emerged as an apex body with full administrative and financial autonomy for efficient operation and management of research conducted by ARS. As per its mandate, PARB is responsible to foster an integrated approach for research prioritization, planning with the involvement of stakeholders, efficient allocation of research resources, co-ordination  with national and international organizations, and Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) of research projects on scientific basis. The ultimate goal is to  transform agriculture innovation system of the province which can generate appropriate solutions of the issues being faced by various stakeholders in the food and fiber chain.
